John 1:17

¹⁷ For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

By following the law one cannot get any closer to God. Law can be applied only to the flesh externally. It cannot be applied to change one’s heart. That is the reason a criminal even after serving time in the prison when release immediately commits the same crime. These are called the seasoned criminals. The law can only put them in prison but in reality but even with the reforms that individual gets perhaps will never learn to change. The same applies to a person who follows the law. It is repetitive in nature. Year after year the Jewish people offered sacrifices in the temple to overcome their sinful nature. This is what Yom Kippur was. Once a year the high priest would offer an animal sacrifice and would sprinkle the animal’s blood on the Mercy Seat.

The One who knew no sin became sin for us. Innocent blood of our Lord Jesus Christ was shed for the remission of our sins.
